Viticulture has been part of everyday life on Santorini for 3,500 years! Karamolegos winery started in 1952. Half a century later, in 2004, grandson Artemis founded his winery in Exo Gonia, at the heart of this volcanic island, with an initial production of 20,000 bottles. Sixteen years on, the production has grown tenfold. They cultivate 8hc of vineyards in Kamari, Messaria, Exo Gonia, Pyrgos, Megalohori and Akrotiri. The grapes for Terra Nera come from lower altitude, 20/30yo vines. From this vintage, Karamolegos voluntarily down-graded Terra Nera to PGI Cyclades so as not to be confused with the top PDO wines. As such the word Assyrtiko is no longer permitted on the label.
