Description
Since Clot de l’Origine’s creation in 2004, its 10 ha have been farmed organically, certified so in 2009. Lying in the Fenouilledes hills, vines are spread over terroirs ranging from Salses le Chateau to Caudiès de Fenouillèdes via Maury and Calce. The grapes are vinified in their Maury cellar, “to vinify as close as possible to the expression of the terroir”. Vigneron Marc Barriot sought out ancient vines and uses traditional practices to deliver truly distinctive wines. He uses biodynamic methods, even plowing by horse, and uses minimal sulphur in his winemaking. The “l’Original” is 100% Macabeu (aka Viura in Spain) from 70+ yo vines. It sees two weeks of skin contact adding tremendous texture and presence. Marc is a relative newcomer to Maury, coming from Bandol, where land is much more expensive and he observes the Roussillon wine scene with the dispassionate eyes of an outsider. He is not afraid voice his opinion, and opinionated he is, insisting on significantly lower alcohol levels than the average wine from Roussillon. ‘I make wines I want to drink’, he asserts.
