Description

Ever since the 1870’s the Penavayre family have cultivated vines in the village of Vacquiers, the
family’s activities were diverse: livestock-farming, orchards of fruit trees, along with vines for winemaking (for family-consumption). Marc’s father Louis taught himself the profession of vigneron. He decided from very early on to orientate his domaine to the growing of the grape varieties required and allowed by the Cotes du Frontonnais regulations.

His wines were sold up till 1990 under the name ‘Domaine Louis Penavayre’ and with this label, he
obtained some significant recognition of the quality of his wines, in 1971, Louis devoted the farm entirely to viticulture. Louis’ son Marc obtained a diploma in Agricultural engineering at the prestigious Agricultural school ENITA (Angers, Loire) and in 1985 Marc obtained a diploma as an oenologue.

The name of the domaine was changed from ‘Domaine Louis Penavayre’ to ‘Chateau Plaisance’, because the area in which the Penavayre family’s wines were planted was known locally and historically as ‘Plaisance’. In 1991, Marc joined his father Louis at the family vineyard, this injection of new blood into the family business, brought a renewal of energy to the estate,
resulting in the acquisition of more land- the number of hectares was now increased from 7 to 16, and over the succeeding years the total number of hectares has grown to reach 30 hectares.
